What to Wear & Bring

This is a medium to high energy physical workout using hatha yoga postures with breath awareness for healthy joints and body.  It has some similarities to an exercise class (although not a substitute for aerobic exercise for cardio vascular health) but being based on yoga postures is health promoting and safe. It complements any exercise you may do in the gym or elsewhere by stretching tight muscles. The class lasts for 1½ hours from 8:00 pm every Tuesday during school terms.  It is held in the Marlborough Youth Centre, St Margaret’s Mead.  Whilst there are some youth activities initially, the place is usually very quiet for the last half of the class. The floor is wooden and smooth - ideal for yoga - and normally quite clean with a special clean just before we start. Gas-fired heating keeps the hall adequately warmed in the cooler months (although the fans can be a bit noisy when they are running). Good off-road parking is available. If students cannot make their normal class one week, they can normally turn up at an alternative DonsYoga class.

If there is sufficient demand, the class will be immediately followed by a classical yoga extension of half an hour to cover mainly non-physical aspects of yoga.

Entry Qualifications

  • As a new entrant you must normally have practised at Yoga Beginner level, or higher, with a qualified yoga teacher for at least one term (10 weeks) within the last 3 months, including equivalent home practice.
  • If you are new to yoga you can join the Beginners Course to qualify.
  • If you are a lapsed yogi, you can join the Restarter Course to qualify.
  • However, if you are new to yoga (or a lapsed yogi) you may also join if you broadly understand & accept the difference between exercise & yoga and the importance of awareness & conscious breathing. You should also be:
    • physically quite fit
    • not be too old (older than about 50)
    • not be very stiff
    • not be pregnant
    • not have any significant health problems
  • Alternatively, to get up to speed, you can request private lessons in parallel with practice at your home.

What You Will Do

In this regular ongoing class, you will:

  • Receive systematic structural flexibility exercises to extend or maintain the range of your joint movements
  • Many yoga asanas (postures) with some balance and some inversion
  • Move with the breath
  • Practice sequences of yoga postures like Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) and Agni Sarav (Fire Reverence)
You will:
  • Improve your sense of well-being and your health
  • Increase your suppleness and maintain healthy joints
  • Increase your energy levels, reduce tiredness and improve your sleep quality
  • Improve your sense of balance
  • Improve your sense of calmness and emotional balance by working with the breath
N.B. There will be minimal relaxation and no explicit yoga philosophy, yogic explanations, pranayama (energy work using the breath), concentration, meditation, linkage to spirituality, working in pairs, guided visualisations or use of sound (mantra, etc.). However, for those who do wish to add these classical yoga elements to their physical work (asana), there will be an immediate follow-on session (subject to sufficient numbers)

Costs & Paying For Your Yoga

There are flexible payment options so you choose which suits you best. There is a drop-in rate so you can pay as you go and save if you cannot make a class - available for a single class or a block, with a discount.

The rate for the regular attender rewards the committed yogi. There is a good additional discount if you pay early for the whole term (and this avoids fiddling about with change every week too) or for just each half term if you prefer, although the saving is slightly less. To claim your early payment discount, payment must be made by the last class of the previous (half) term, except for the long summer break when it is 3 weeks before the class starts.

You can pay on-line for any option using PayPal - please be patient whilst the shopping cart downloads - it is secure, free and easy to set up. Find out more about PayPal, enabling you to use your credit card for your yoga, why amounts are shown in dollars and even how to send money to anyone else with an email account!

If you want a mat, block or belt, don’t forget to add these to your shopping cart!

You can also pay by cheque, gift voucher or cash - in person or by post (except cash).

If you are a new student, don’t forget to claim your first lesson FREE! Guarantee of satisfaction - if you prepay, but aren’t completely happy at the end of your free lesson, you can ask for a complete refund!
